What Is IV Sedation?
Dental sedation is a service we offer which helps our patients have a more relaxing visit during their dental treatment. It involves the use of medication to provide a sedative effect which helps reduce anxiety. Most sedation does not put you to sleep, but it does allow you to feel more relaxed, comfortable and calm. This calming effect is especially important during procedures that are commonly associated with pain, like fillings or extractions. However, sedation can even be used for simple tooth cleanings if it helps our patient.
How Does IV Sedation Work?
Sedation is usually associated with anesthesia, which causes patients to become unconscious. But not all sedatives put patients to sleep. Sedation slightly lowers your state of consciousness, giving you a peaceful sense of calm. At Alpen Dental, we utilize IV sedation.
IV sedation involves the use of a small cannula which is inserted into a vein either in your arm or hand. Once attached, relaxing medication is released into the bloodstream via an intravenous tube. We maintain a constant drip throughout your dental procedure to ensure that the effects last as long as you need them to. If needed, we can reverse the sedative effects by administering an antidote.
Benefits of IV Sedation
The main benefit of IV sedation is that it relieves the anxiety of nervous patients. Fear and trepidation of the dentist are the main reasons why people avoid regular examinations. But sedation services can allow patients to have a comfortable experience, potentially alleviating future concerns about the dentist.
However, there are a few additional benefits of IV sedation, such as:
- Reduced gag reflex, an issue that sometimes hinders dentists as they work
- Decreased pain
- The ability for the dentist to work faster because the patient is more comfortable
- Help to alleviate the fears of pediatric patients
